An investigation is underway into the leaking of fluid into a bay near Northport.
A dialectic fluid from a PSEG Long Island underground transmission line had been leaking into the street and down into the harbor since Monday.
The New York state Department of Environmental Conversation says the leak was found and issued a statement saying in part: "The source of the leak was identified on Church Street early this morning and was permanently climbed by PSEG."
PSEG LI Communications Senior Generalist Jeremy Walsh released a statement saying that, "Crews are investigating the cause of the leak."
The utility agency has also hired an environmental company to remediate the contamination.
Although dialectic fluid is not considered hazardous, environmentalist Adrienne Esposito says it is harmful to aquatic life.
"If you have oil going into the harbor, there are concerns for the wildlife birds, fin fish, shellfish and marine species," Esposito says.
Deby Sorensen says she noticed an unusual odor while on board her boat in Northport Harbor.
"As we pulled in, you could smell it - there's a very strong fuel smell," Sorensen says. "It's not pleasant."
